The Lakemba War Memorial, erected in 1953, serves as a gathering point for Anzac Day marches and memorial services. Over the years, the Memorial deteriorated due to moss and algae build-up, pressure washing damage, salt attack on the sandstone, and landscaping damage. An upgrade was crucial for veterans and the community.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council, with Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch and Canterbury League Club, initiated the restoration ahead of Anzac Day 2024. Excelsis Projects was engaged to carry out the restoration and prepared a scope of works using minimally invasive techniques to preserve the heritage structure. The restoration included removing surface decay, mortar patch repairs, deep cleaning, installing new turf, and adding a new plaque detailing the Memorial’s history.
The restoration was completed in time for Anzac Day 2024, renewing the Memorial’s significance for veterans and the community.
