Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1859, however, the original sanctuary was badly damaged by a fire in 1956 and never properly restored.

A new sanctuary was envisioned which paid homage to the original design while also meeting structural and liturgical standards. Designs by Sidney Rofe, architect, brought back to life elements of the pre-1956 sanctuary with a new altar and reredos, which were handmade by Wayne Mavin, bespoke joiner.

Our team restored and reinforced the new sanctuary floor and co-ordinated the installation of new parquetry flooring and the new liturgical furnishings. These works involved preserving elements of high heritage and religious significance.

Parishioners and visitors are now drawn to a space that reflects the church’s original beauty and has a sense of permanence despite its evolving inner-city surrounds.
