The Lakemba War Memorial recently underwent a significant restoration, ensuring it was ready for this year’s ANZAC Day commemorations. The sandstone memorial, first unveiled on 19 April 1953, honours local servicemen and women, veterans and fallen comrades.

The restoration, led by Excelsis Projects, included a gentle cleaning treatment, hand scrubbing to remove accumulated dirt and algae, repointing mortar joints, and repairing minor surface damages. This meticulous process aimed to preserve the historical integrity of the memorial while enhancing its appearance.

Members of the Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch, along with Canterbury-Bankstown Council Mayor Clr Bilal El-Hayek, were present to admire the restored memorial at its unveiling. Tim McCaw, Social Welfare Officer of Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch and a key advocate for the restoration, praised the work, noting the significant improvement and the memorial’s enhanced appearance.

The restoration project not only revitalised the memorial but also ensured its preservation for future generations. Excelsis Projects takes pride in contributing to such meaningful projects that honour the sacrifices of local heroes.
